Description

Bloody Knife (1837–1876) was a Native American of mixed Hunkpapa Sioux and Arikara (Sahnish) descent, best known for his role as a scout for George Armstrong Custer during the Black Hills Expedition and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. His complex identity, being part Sioux and part Arikara, placed him in a contentious position, particularly given the historic enmity between these tribes.

Custer greatly valued Bloody Knife for his skills as a tracker and interpreter. Bloody Knife’s death occurred at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he was killed during the conflict that also claimed Custer’s life.

A bust of Bloody Knife could capture his warrior-like demeanor with traditional Native American features, such as a strong, stern facial expression, long hair, possibly with braids or ornamentation, and distinctive clothing like buckskin or feathers indicative of his heritage.
