Description
The John Lurie – Down By Law LP from 1987, released by Crammed Discs, is a soundtrack album for Jim Jarmusch's 1986 film Down By Law. John Lurie, a jazz musician and actor, composed most of the music for the film, contributing to its laid-back yet atmospheric tone. The soundtrack complements the film's offbeat and noirish style, set in New Orleans and following the stories of three prisoners (played by Tom Waits, Roberto Benigni, and Lurie himself) who escape from jail.
Tom Waits also contributed two of his songs to the soundtrack: "Jockey Full of Bourbon" and "Tango Till They're Sore," both from his Rain Dogs album. These songs fit perfectly within the film’s surreal, languid setting.
Lurie's music on this album showcases his minimalist jazz style, incorporating moody brass and subtle rhythms. The music is sparse yet effective, creating an atmosphere of mystery and cool detachment. As a whole, the LP serves not just as a soundtrack but also as a standalone piece of experimental jazz.
